Child Care and Early Education

Early Head Start - University of Nevada Reno (Washoe)

Head Start and Early Head Start are federally funded programs that promote the school readiness of young children from low-income families. Early Head Start typically serves pregnant women and children from birth to age three. Head Start serves children aged three to five years old. Both programs emphasize a holistic approach, considering not only the educational needs of children but also their health, nutrition, and family support to ensure a well-rounded foundation for learning and growth.

The UNR Early Head Start Program offers comprehensive development services for poverty-level pregnant women and families with children aged 0-3. It includes a home visiting program with weekly visits by certified educators, focusing on parent engagement and child development, and a full-day, full-year center-based child care for low-income families, providing developmental support and care essentials. Additionally, in partnership with the Washoe County School District, it offers child care at two high schools, combined with home visiting services, catering to the needs of high school parents.
