Head Start and Early Head Start are federally funded programs that promote the school readiness of young children from low-income families. Early Head Start typically serves pregnant women and children from birth to age three. Head Start serves children aged three to five years old. Both programs emphasize a holistic approach, considering not only the educational needs of children but also their health, nutrition, and family support to ensure a well-rounded foundation for learning and growth.
The mission of Head Start is to provide quality care and education that support each child’s individual pattern of development and learning. This is provided in a loving and safe environment that is friendly and nurturing for all children, parents and employees. The Reno-Sparks Indian Colony Head Start Program provides center-based early childhood education services to 52 three to five year old children from income-eligible families, including children with disabilities. The Reno Center serves 35 children and the Hungry Valley Center serves 17 children in a traditional Head Start setting from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. A full-day service is provided for families in Reno who require before and after care based on parent work hours between 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Meals are prepared and served at each site sponsored by the State of Nevada Child and Adult Care Food Program and Reno-Sparks Indian Colony Tribal funds.
