Nevada Legal Services

Nevada Legal Services (NLS) provides a range of services from telephone advice to representation in court. The level of representation depends on the type of problem, the merits of the case, and staff availability. NLS also offers workshops, educational seminars, law fairs, and ask-a-lawyer events. NLS offers support on a wide range of issues, including:

  • Housing and Homelessness - Evictions, lockouts, utility shut-offs, public housing, etc.
  • Consumer/Foreclosure - Fair debt collection, foreclosures, and loan modifications.
  • Public Benefits - Unemployment benefits, SNAP, County Welfare, TANF, Social Security/SSI, Medicaid, Medicare, and other federal assistance programs.
  • Record Sealing - Sealing criminal and eviction records to remove barriers to housing and employment.
  • Name/Gender Marker Changes - Changing name/gender marker on birth certificates or other documents.
  • Special Education - Assistance if your child has been denied an IEP (Individualized Education Plan).
  • Employment Discrimination - File a complaint with the NERC or EEOC if you believe you have been discriminated against at work.
  • Estate Planning - Options for estate and end of life planning, including wills and other documents (does not include drafting trusts).
  • Criminal Law - NLS does not provide criminal representation except for matters in tribal court.
  • Family Law - NLS has a Pro Bono Program and Ask A Lawyer events for family law matters.

The list above is a general description of services, but the current case types accepted by each office may vary.  Please check with your local office to see if you qualify for assistance.

If you do not qualify for services through NLS and do not know of an attorney that can help, you can contact the Nevada State Bar for a low cost consultation with an attorney on the lawyer referral panel. Contact the Nevada State Bar Lawyer Referral Service at 1-800-789-5747.
